House Rules

Following are House Rules for the Eta Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega. These House Rules incorporate by reference all applicable National rules and policies in the Book of Rules as well as applicable university and Panhellenic rules and regulations.

These House Rules were established by the House Corporation in cooperation with the Active Chapter and the Alumnae Advisory Board.

  • The Chapter Officers, Personnel Board, Advisory Committee, and House Director are responsible for seeing that the House Rules are enforced. A Standards Board, comprised of the GH, Personnel Chairman, House Manager, a representative from each class, and an Alumna Advisor, will handle minor infractions of the House Rules. The House Manager will be appointed each year by the Executive Board. Class representatives will be elected yearly from each class.
  • The officers, members, and new members of each chapter bear personal responsibility to abide by applicable federal, state, and local laws and applicable college/university and Chi Omega rules and regulations.
  • In accordance with the Policy on Alcohol, the possession, sale, use, or consumption of alcoholic beverages is not permitted in Chapter Houses or on any Chi Omega property. This rule also applies to the use and possession of illegal substances and the illegal use of prescription drugs.
  • The Chapter will co-sponsor functions at the Chapter House only if those functions are alcohol free.
  • In accordance with the Policy on Visitation, the Chapter limits hours from 10:00 am to 2:00 am for male visitation in the public areas of the house. Overnight male guests are prohibited.
  • Male guests are not permitted in the sleeping quarters or in individual members’ rooms. Male guests are only allowed in the private areas of the House at specific times, including move-in, Parents Weekend, and other approved events.
  • All guests (male and female) must be accompanied at all times in the Chapter House by a Chapter Member.
  • Smoking is not permitted inside or directly in front of the Chapter House or within 25 feet of the Chapter House.
  • Pets of any kind are not permitted in the Chapter House.
  • In accordance with the Policy on Firearms, the presence, possession, and/or use of firearms or explosive devices of any kind within the confines and premises of Chapter Housing is expressly forbidden.
  • The exterior doors to the Chapter House must be kept locked 24 hours a day. Entrance is by key fob, provided to all active and new members in good standing as well as to Advisors and House Corporation members.
  • Doors must not be propped open.  Windows on the first floor must be kept closed and locked. Open windows on the second floor should not be left unattended.
  • The emergency procedure, as outlined in the Book of Rules, applies to any emergency that occurs at a Chapter event or on Chapter property.
  • The House Manager and House Director should be notified immediately of any security and/or health concerns.
  • Fire safety procedures will be covered at the beginning of each semester. A fire drill conducted by UofSC Department of Fire Safety will be held at least once each semester.
  • A health and safety inspection is performed each semester by UofSC Fire Safety and Fraternity and Sorority Life. The Chi Omega House Corporation reserves the right to inspect the residents’ rooms no less than once a semester.
  • Do not overload any electrical circuit or leave items on when not in use (e.g. curling irons, irons). Extension cords are not permitted. Only surge protectors approved by UofSC Fire Safety and the Chi Omega House Corporation may be used.
  • Fire exits must not be blocked. Furniture, boxes and trash are not permitted in the hallways.
  • Candles (including those used for decorative purposes only) or other flammable objects are prohibited.
  • Quiet hours throughout the entire house are from 10:00 pm until 10:00 am each day. Quiet hours in the study halls and during finals are 24 hours a day.
  • All furniture must remain in its assigned room. If you wish to remove any furniture, written permission must be obtained in advance from the House Corporation and the House Director.
  • Nails or tacks may not be placed on any bedroom walls. Tape, to include Command Strips, of any kind may not be used on the walls or painted surfaces. All shelving must be freestanding.
  • Rooms must be kept neat and orderly. Please empty your trash cans, bags and boxes in the dumpster located behind the Alpha Chi Omega House.
  • Food may not be taken from the dining room to the sleeping quarters unless prior arrangements have been made with the House Director.
  • Shoes, slippers, boots, sandals or flip­ flops must be worn while on the first floor of the House. Bare feet or (just) socks are prohibited at all times. While watching television in the Lounge, shoes may be removed but must be put back on before departing the room. If you are wearing high heels, use the carpeted back stairwell rather than the front stairwell for safety reasons.
  • All dishes, glasses, and silverware must remain in the dining room and kitchen area.
  • All members and new members must take meals at the Chi Omega House and must provide the House Manager with school/work schedules at the beginning of each semester in order to request a reservation for late plates and/or sack lunches.
  • Guest meals must be paid for in advance. Please notify the House Director if you will be having a guest at any meal and remember to include the guest on the sign - up sheet.
  • All books, projects and study materials must be removed from the dining room before breakfast.
  • Laundry may not be left unattended.
  • All housing contracts must be completed online by March 1 of each year.
  • Guests sleeping at the House must follow the Overnight Guest Policy posted on the House Corp website.
